Facial rollers are the latest and trendiest skincare tool that claim to have a ton of benefits for your skin. If you’ve spent some time scrolling through your Instagram feed or spent any time on YouTube lately, then you’ve probably seen your favorite blogger or influencer talk about face rollers. But what exactly do these facial rollers do? And…do face rollers really work?

What Is A Face Roller?

Face rollers come in various forms — glass, plastic, and best of all, mineral based. Mineral based face rollers, like jade and quartz, target skin concerns by their mineral properties and physical capabilities. For example, how well they hold temperature. Apart from their mineral  properties, they also are said to have metaphysical properties which include promoting an overall sense of health and wellbeing, if that’s something you’re into.

Face rollers are basically a handy dandy tool used for facial massage. They look a little similar to a small rolling pin with a handle. The major hype surrounding face rollers is mainly due to their ability to reduce puffiness, increase blood flow and collagen in the skin, and much more. They really are a great addition to any beauty regimen or skincare routine.

Types of Face Rollers

Mineral based facial rollers come in various forms, so let’s learn more about the different types.

Rose quartz

Rose quartz, also referred to as the “Love Stone” and the “Crystal of Venus” is valued by many for its healing benefits and anti-inflammatory properties. Rose Quartz is known for its metaphysical properties — clearing the heart chakra, leaving you stress-free and able to let go of all negativity, including hurt and pain from the past. Rose quartz is thought to purify and open the heart at all levels while promoting inner healing and delivering clear complexity. The rose quartz facial roller is an ‘emotional healer’ that can be used to reduce and release impurities and stress in the skin. It’s best for detoxing, lifting, softening fine lines and wrinkles, and releasing negative energy.

Clear Quartz

Another common crystal is the clear quartz facial roller which is most commonly known as the “Master Healer.” This is due to its ability to pair with other crystals which is said to amplify their energies and healing properties. The clear quartz also contains a very high content of silica which is an important mineral for overall skin health.

Jade

Jade is considered beneficial to the skin by improving its immunity. A jade roller is an ideal tool for tackling wrinkles and puffiness as it’s said to improve your skin’s resiliency which aids in anti-aging. The jade crystal is also known for its calming effects, making it ideal for those with sensitive and irritated skin especially when cooled down in the freezer.

Blue Sodalite

Blue sodalite is best known for its ability to improve the overall health of your skin by improving its hydration. Its mineral property effects include calming inflammation, promoting healing, and aiding in balancing mineral deficiencies in the skin.

Amethyst

Amethyst is said to be a powerful and protective crystal. It’s believed to address daily stressors which wreck havoc on the skin. Some great results include calming inflammation and reducing puffiness. As a result, amethyst facial rollers are a prime choice among consumers, especially with acne-prone skin.

Red Jasper

The red jasper stone is also known as the “Goddess’s stone” and a symbol of bold beauty. It is believed that this gemstone has physical properties that help to stimulate the skin which in turn addresses issues like hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

Black Obsidian

Black obsidian is a stone with “potent energy properties” which include elements of fire, water, and earth. The belief is that the healing effect of black obsidian penetrates skin deep and rejuvenates the body on all levels. Black obsidian is one of the most commonly used gemstones for facial rollers on the market.

If you believe in the metaphysical properties of crystals and their effects on the skin and body, feel free to choose accordingly. Just know that outside of their claims, known of these effects are backed by the scientific community. But, no need to fear because we have provided a list of the science-based benefits of face rollers below.

Science-Backed Benefits of Face Rollers

Key benefits:

  • Increasing blood flow. Using a face massage roller directly relates to stimulating blood flow to the area which promotes collagen production, plus makes skin look firmer and appear brighter.
  • Reducing puffiness. The cooling effect of facial rollers are known to quickly de-puff the skin which in turn also helps tighten pores. A great tool to target under eye bags and puffy cheeks.
  • Simulating lymphatic drainage. It is a known fact that facial rollers promote lymphatic drainage. Another great key is that allergy sufferers can especially benefit from this. It works by rolling the skin to flush out toxins and clear sinuses.
  • Encouraging product absorption. When face rollers are paired with a mask, oil, or moisturizer, they are known to penetrate products deeper into the skin. This ensures you get the most out of your product.
  • Helping contour the face. Face rollers help contour the face by draining fluid from the skin away from the face. This helps to temporarily contour the face making it the perfect tool to use before applying makeup for a night out.
