Dermarolling was an unfamiliar concept initially because people were skeptical of rolling needles on their faces, but people have warmed up to the concept over time after seeing the benefits. Let’s start by first understanding what dermarolling is. Derma rolling is a form of microneedling that involves rolling a wheel containing many tiny needles over the skin to prick the skin gently.

A derma roller works by creating some microscopic wounds in your skin which will induce the production of collagen and elastin, which leaves your complexion feeling plumper and tighter. Dermarolling can benefit all skin types, but individuals with sensitive skin should avoid doing it too frequently. Also, derma rollers usually boost the absorption of ingredients in your skin when used with a serum. Our editors have reviewed the best derma rollers to help you choose the top option.

How to Use a Derma Roller

Like any beauty routine, Derma rolling involves a few steps before doing the main thing, which in this case is using a derma roller to either lessen the appearance of acne scars or for collagen and elastin production. Also, your needle size should match your problematic area.

1. Preparation

Start by cleaning both your skin and the roller to reduce any chance of bacteria transfer because tiny needles penetrate your skin. Disinfect your derma roller by soaking it in 70% isopropyl alcohol and leave it to soak for about 10 minutes, then shake off the excess and let the derma roller air dry.

To prepare your skin, wash it thoroughly with a foaming cleanser but don’t use anything that will be too harsh on your skin, and opt for gentle cleansers. If you are using longer needles, you will need to disinfect your skin because it will have deeper penetration. Apply the rubbing alcohol across your skin if you will be using a needle length of more than 0.5 millimeters because needles longer than that are meant to treat skin tone and texture.

2. The Process

Apply a numbing cream depending on your level of pain tolerance and opt for one that is above 1.0mm since the needle might draw blood through pinpoint bleeding. It is important to understand which technique is the best to use the tool effectively.

Use our top derma roller and start rolling in one direction about six to eight times, depending on your pain tolerance level and lift it after you pass each time. Lifting the derma roller with each pass prevents any dreaded track marks that may your face look scratched. Adjust the derma roller slightly after rolling in the same place and repeat the rolling process.

The rolling method should be done in three parts: diagonal, vertical, and horizontal movements, starting from the forehead applying moderate pressure. You should not use a derma roller for more than 2 minutes in one movement continuously.

Also, during the derma rolling session, avoid the eye area and be careful with sensitive areas such as the upper lip and nose area.

    3. Aftercare

After you have used the derma roller properly, apply a serum, an anti-aging, or a hydrating product that will penetrate deeper and ensure the product does not include Vitamin C or retinol. For the next 24 hours, you should apply sunscreen and avoid hot showers, exercise, or wearing makeup.

    4. Cleanup

After the micro-needling is done, rinse your face with water and clean your derma roller using dish soap because alcohol doesn’t dissolve in proteins found in blood and skin. Follow your skin up with a basic skincare routine or a sheet mask, provided it does not involve active ingredients.

Benefits of Using a Derma Roller

    1. Enhances product absorption

Absorption of topical products like serums and creams is easier after the treatment, and therefore, you get benefits from the products faster.

    2. Reduces skin discoloration and acne scarring

Several studies have shown that derma rolling is an effective treatment in treating active acne because the needles result in scar healing.

    3. Reduces fine lines, stretch marks, and wrinkles

Few sessions of using the small roller usually yield results, and you can see fewer wrinkles and lines on the forehead. It can also reduce stretch marks after weight loss or childbirth.

    4. It can be combined with other treatments

Micro-needling can be used together with other acne scar treatments to maximize the potential benefits of your treatment.

    5. Allows the formation of more collagen

Derma rolling usually stimulates your skin, causing it to produce new collagen naturally, and you can start to see clean skin or results after about two dermarolling sessions.

    6. It can be used on the hair loss

Apart from helping to stimulate collagen and boosting collagen production and blood flow, a derma roller can be used over the scalp or hairline. It forms tiny punctures that make it easy for oils to get to the hair follicles and promotes beard growth and hair growth.

Frequently Asked Questions on Derma Rolling

    1. How often should you derma roll?

How tolerant your skin is with the treatment is often determined, but initially, you should use derma rollers a few times a week. However, if your skin tolerates the derma rolling sessions without issues, then you can use it every other day.

    2. Do you put a serum on before or after a derma roller?

Serums can be applied both before and after you finish a roll session for different reasons we have stated above.
